Parents

We believe that responsibility for student success is shared among parents, students, teachers, and the community.

Before a child starts school, parents have the most important job: preparing their child to learn. When you talk, read, and sing with your children, even before they can use words, you’re shaping their intellect and the way they learn—the foundation for success in school and in life. Today, there’s virtually no limit to the resources parents can draw upon to make learning fun for their children. Here are two helpful websites:

From K through 12, when parents are actively involved in their student’s academic and social development, the results are dramatic. Students have better school attendance, are more motivated, get higher grades, and achieve higher graduation rates. Teachers have to deal with fewer behavior problems, leading to fewer suspensions, less alcohol and drug use, and a more positive learning environment. To that end, district-wide programs address serious issues like discipline inside and outside the classroom, depression and suicide prevention, drug awareness, and bullying.

As a school district, we believe that students learn best in a safe, secure, engaging environment, and that all students have dignity, value, and voice. That belief takes shape in our innovative programs for students with disabilities, and our designated K-5 classroom for emotionally impaired students. Another program pairs students with others on the autism spectrum. And one elementary school, Southwest, is the magnet school for students whose first language is not English.
