Howell Air Force JROTC Cadet Receives Highly Competitive Navy ROTC Scholarship

5/10/2024 - Noah Flores, a Hartland High School senior and Flight Sergeant with the Howell High School Air Force Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (AFJROTC) unit, has earned a highly competitive Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) National Scholarship. The scholarship provides full tuition at any university with an NROTC program, an annual book stipend, a monthly stipend, and summer training cruises with Naval Officers to gain on-the-job experience. To qualify for the scholarship, students must meet the required SAT/ACT score, complete multiple interviews with various military personnel and civilian workers, and be deemed medically qualified by the Department of Defense.
"I plan to attend the University of Hawaii to major in marine biology and train to become a leader in the Navy. This scholarship will allow me to do this because it pays for my tuition and will give me the training to become a naval officer upon graduation from college," said Flores. I also plan to become a pilot. This is one of the job opportunities that will be readily available to me at graduation. After some additional training, I can become a naval pilot."

Jeffrey Bundy, U.S. Air Force and Howell High School senior aerospace science instructor. This scholarship is an incredible opportunity for Cadet Flores to further develop his skills and make a significant impact as a future Naval officer."
Flores was on vacation out of the country when he received the news that he had been selected for the NROTC National Scholarship. "I opened the email and was instantly amazed as I read it. I was very excited and instantly called my parents, but no one responded, so I forwarded them the email so they could read it later. My parents later called me, and they were also very excited. They told everyone around them. Later, when I came back, I got a big congratulations from everyone and their parents," said Flores.
