11/2/7 – Recently, students in Luann Haskins’ poetry class at Howell High School visited Challenger Elementary to share their original poetry with some of the school’s second-grade students. The high school students shared several poems in various styles such as Haikus, Syllabics and Limericks. Additionally, they taught the elementary students how to write their own poems.

“For this project, we had to create a book of various types of poetry and explain what the type of poetry was and give a space for the student to write their own poetry. The students were really enthusiastic about it,” said Alaina Ettema, Howell High School junior.

“We learned what a limerick poem was and we got to write our own syllabic poem, said Tobin, Challenger Elementary second grader.

As part of the project, the high school students created books that included their original poems, spaces for the elementary students to write their own poems and fun activities. The books with left with the second-grade students to use in their class.
