10/4/17 - On October 13, students at Highlander Way Middle School will be holding a schoolwide 5K run/walk to support the American Red Cross. All money raised from the Hawks Care 5K will be donated to the Red Cross to help those affected by the recent hurricanes that have hit the United States and its territories. The event is being planned entirely by the school's student body.

“Our students really wanted to find a way to support those who have been impacted by the three hurricanes that have devastated parts of our country,” said Melanie Post, Highlander Way Middle School principal. “Working in grade level groups during our advisory  time, the students have researched organizations to support, planned the race and promoted the event to their fellow students and parents.”

The school's sixth-grade students undertook the task of researching various organizations to donate the funds raised by the Hawks Care 5K.  After much research and meeting with a longtime volunteer of the American Red Cross, the students selected it as the beneficiary of their fundraising efforts. Highlander Way seventh-grade students have been busy planning the race and making plans in the event of rain on the day of the race. Eighth-grade students at the school have been thinking of various ways to promote the race to the school's student body and contacting local business for possible community donations.

While the Hawks Care 5K is not open to the public, community members and businesses who would like to support this cause can do so by making a donation. All money raised will be donated to the American Red Cross. A donation form can be found be at https://goo.gl/LwvYXn. If you have any questions you can contact Ms. Clark at clarkt@howellschools.com
