Blackmar and Williams12/10/18 - Howell Public Schools is pleased to announce that Cindy Blackmar has been selected as its 2018-2019 Service Person of the Year and that Laura Williams has been named its 2018-2019 Support Person of the Year. Both Blackmar and Williams were presented with their awards this week.

Blackmar, a paraprofessional at Northwest Elementary, works to build relationships and trust with the individual students she works with. She learns about their interests as well as the things that bother them, to help ensure that the students are successful. “Cindy is one of the most dedicated and knowledgeable staff members that I have worked with. She gets to know the individual students she works with, building that much-needed relationship,” said Breanne Green in her nomination of Blackmar.

As the Challenger Elementary building secretary, Williams is often the first person a visitor to the school sees and warmly greets everyone as she juggles the busy office environment. In several nominations, it was noted how knowledgeable Williams is regarding district policies and guidelines and that she is always willing to help any student, teacher or parent even if the request falls outside of her job responsibilities. “Laura is the backbone of our school. Regardless of how busy she is, she will always take the time to help someone. Laura often comes in early or stays late to finish a job that needs to be completed. Most importantly, she cares for all of our students as if they were her own,” said David Cherry, Challenger Elementary principal.

The Service Person of the Year award honors an outstanding paraprofessional, general education aide, copy clerk, mentor, hall monitor, food service employee or maintenance worker. The Support Person of the year honors an exceptional secretary, main office clerk, library services coordinator, bookkeeper or computer technician.

A committee of district stakeholders met Nov. 27 to consider 17 nominations for Service Person of the Year and 19 nominations for Support Person of the Year. After reviewing all of the nominations, the committee selected Blackmar and Williams as this year’s winners.

Please join the entire Howell Public Schools community in congratulating Cindy Blackmar and Laura Williams on their extraordinary work and dedication to Howell Public Schools. The Howell Board of Education will honor both Blackmar and Williams at its meeting in February.
