8/29/18 - Recently, the State of Michigan released the results from the 2018 statewide summative assessment, the M-STEP. The M-STEP is a computer adaptive testing (CAT), which provides a more personalized test experience for students. The purpose of the assessment is to see how close students are to reaching Michigan’s new higher standards in English language arts and mathematics. Results from the 2018 science portion of the M-STEP assessment were not released as that test is still being field tested.

On the 2018 assessment, Howell Public Schools saw some slight increases in student proficiency as well as some declines. This trend was similar in many districts in Livingston County and across the state. “We are not pleased to see declining proficiently rates. However, that seems to be the trend with this year’s assessment. Internally, our data from the nationally-normed NWEA assessment is showing above average student growth in Reading and Math,” said Erin MacGregor, Howell Public Schools superintendent. “Despite the declines, our M-STEP scores still exceed state averages in all but one content area and grade level.”

As Howell Public Schools works to increase student proficiency rates, it continues to add new support systems and practices. To promote summer reading, the district launched its mobile library, The Highlander Reading Express, and several schools held summer reading programs. The district is also working to provide teachers with students previous assessment data to help the teachers better differentiate their instruction based on student needs. Lastly, the district has increased its instructional coaches and joined the Washtenaw and Livingston Early Literacy Network.

"The M-STEP is one source of information for us to evaluate our student's progress regarding content mastery. However, as we examine overall student performance we believe students must be provided opportunities to demonstrate mastery of essential skills such as problem-solving, creativity, innovation, adaptability, and leadership. In turn, we are broadening our assessment toolbox to get the most accurate information on each of our students."

Below are the district’s 2018 M-STEP results. Last year’s M-STEP results have been included to show changes from 2017. Howell Public Schools exceeded state averages in all but one grade level content area.
