4/28/17 - Recently third-grade students in Mrs. Kim Laviolette’s class at Voyager Elementary became product testers as they researched different school supplies. Working in groups, the students used project-based learning as they conducted research on different school supplies and ran tests to see which product performed the best. Using their research information, each group created a poster sharing their knowledge of their selected product and demonstrating the scientific process they used to conduct the research and tests. Both students and Mrs. Laviolette were surprised by some of the results.

“The students in Mrs. Laviolette’s class have me rethinking some of my school supply choices,” said Kate Rossetter, Howell Public Schools instructional coach. “They showed me that the brand name or most popular brand is not always the best performing product.”

“The students in my class were eager to test products and really came to understand the scientific method and the importance of conducting a fair test,” said Laviolette. “The knowledge they gained has carried over to our science units and given them a critical eye when hearing advertisements and product claims. The students were so proud of their research and practiced hard to give great presentations. When parents and community members came to view their research, one student exclaimed, ‘We are going to be famous!'"

Additionally, the students shared their research with the staff at Voyager to help aid them in their school supply purchases.
