Voyager Students Write Biographies of School Staff Members

12/1/17 – First-grade students at Voyager Elementary recently completed biographies of the teachers and staff at their school. The students interviewed staff, wrote their biographies, designed a flag to hang outside their staff members room and created an audio recording of their biography. The students included a quick response code (QR code) on each flag that allowed individuals to listen to the audio recording of the biography. The project tied to the first-grade social studies standards of learning about the people in the community and the jobs they do.

During the project, the students used Project Based Learning which brought several academic areas into one project. In addition to the social studies standards, students applied math to design and create their flags, English Language Arts for writing their biography and conducting their interviews. The students also used their new classroom iPads for recording the interviews, taking pictures of staff members, downloading recording their biography sound bites and creating QR codes.

“I love that, when given choices about who to interview, when to interview them, where to interview them,  what to ask, what to write, how to decorate their flag, what clipart and pictures to include, and so on, my students were more engaged in the process and more creative in their final product,” said Sharon Barlow, Voyager Elementary first grade teacher.

To celebrate the completion of the project, students invited their family and interviewees in for a celebration to view their flags, read their biographies, and listen to their audio recordings. They chose to have cake and 7-Up to “toast” the authors.
