8/21/17 – More than 200 current and former Hutchings Elementary students and their families gathered at the school on Monday, August 21 to watch the solar eclipse. The gathering was planned by the school’s fifth-grade teachers, who hosted a similar event for the lunar eclipse that took place in March of 2015.

“In fifth grade, our students study the sun and the stages of the moon, so the eclipse is very relevant to what the students learn in class,” said Jason DeLand, Hutchings Elementary fifth grade teacher. “When we hosted the lunar eclipse watch party in 2015, we told the students that we would hold a similar party for the next solar eclipse. We invited all of our students from 2015 through the incoming fifth-grade class to the solar eclipse watch party.”

Each family who attended received a special pair of glasses to view the eclipse. The teachers also supplied materials for students to make a cereal box solar eclipse viewer.
