Recently students in Jana Jilek-Wolfe’s first grade class at
Hutchings Elementary held the grand opening of the Wolfepack Reading and
Writing Restaurant. As the restaurant opened, parents and special
guests were greeted by their student and shown to their table. The menu
for the day consisted of an appetizer, main course and dessert, each of
which showcased what the students have learned over the course of the
For the appetizer, guests were asked to choose from a
selection of three books. Students then read the book to their guests
to show their reading growth. Next up was the main course, which
included to writing projects that the students shared with their guests.
For dessert, each student shared their portfolios that were filled with
pictures and writing from the school year.
In preparation for
the grand opening, students selected three books that they would read
and practiced reading each one, as they did not know which book would be
selected by their guests. The also created their own aprons, made
centerpieces and practiced being servers.
