After more than 20 rounds of competition, Hutchings Elementary
student Haley Matta was named the winner of the 2016 Howell Public
Schools Fifth Grade Spelling Bee. Matta out spelled 20 other fifth grade
students from around the district to be named the winner of this year’s
spelling bee. Each Howell elementary school sent the top three spellers
from its school Fifth Grade Spelling Bee to the event. Coming in second
place was Elijah Madison from Voyager Elementary. Third place went to
Lucus Schumaker from Hutchings Elementary.
According to Matta,
“it felt really good,” to win the spelling bee. To prepare for the
event, she spent time practicing her spelling at home. For Matta, the
hardest word of the spelling bee was mechanic.
The 2016 Howell
Public Schools Fifth Grade Spelling Bee was held Wednesday, May 4 in the
Howell High School Freshman Campus auditorium.
