Jan Elliott’s second-grade class at Hutchings Elementary School recently shared the biographies that they wrote on various inventors during a celebration in the school’s library. The celebration concluded a seven-month long project that embraced the ideas behind project-based learning by engaging students and integrating numerous subject areas such as social studies, English Language Arts and even Art into the project.

The project began as groups of students selected and researched an inventor. Once they became experts on their inventors, students began writing a biography of that person. Students wrote and edited their biographies making sure they were historically accurate and covered all aspects of the person’s life. Once their biography was completed the students created illustrations for their book.

Each of the student written biographies have been added to the school’s library collection and are available for other students to check out.
