Jan Elliott’s second-grade class at Hutchings Elementary School
recently shared the biographies that they wrote on various inventors
during a celebration in the school’s library. The celebration concluded a
seven-month long project that embraced the ideas behind project-based
learning by engaging students and integrating numerous subject areas
such as social studies, English Language Arts and even Art into the
The project began as groups of students selected and
researched an inventor. Once they became experts on their inventors,
students began writing a biography of that person. Students wrote and
edited their biographies making sure they were historically accurate and
covered all aspects of the person’s life. Once their biography was
completed the students created illustrations for their book.

library collection and are available for other students to check out.
