Howell Public Schools 2015/2016 M-STEP Scores Released
Posted on 08/30/2016

In the spring of 2016, Howell Public Schools students took Michigan’s summative statewide test, the M-STEP, for the second time. The 2016 M-STEP incorporated computer adaptive testing (CAT), which provides a more personalized test experience for students and improved test security, as well as more precise measures of learning for schools. Additionally, in 2016 incoming high school seniors received the SAT college entrance exam scores as part of the Michigan Merit Exam (MME). The MME also reports M-STEP results in science and social studies. The purpose of the M-STEP assessment is to see how close students are to reaching Michigan’s new higher standards in English language arts and mathematics.

After establishing baseline scores in 2015, Howell students saw significant growth in some content areas and slight declines in others. “The trends in our district level data closely mirror the trends in the state average data,” said Erin MacGregor, Howell Public Schools superintendent. “In the areas where we saw increases, the state average increased, in the areas where we saw a decrease, the state average also decreased. I am very pleased that our M-STEP scores still exceed state averages in almost every grade level and content area.”

Below are the district’s 2016-2017 M-STEP results. Last year’s M-STEP results have been included to show changes from 2015 to 2016. Howell Public Schools exceeded state averages in all but one grade level content area.

“It is great to see double digit gains in some grade levels and content areas. As our instruction adapts to these new higher standards, I expect our scores to continue to rise over time,” said MacGregor. “Our school and district improvement teams will be reviewing our M-STEP data to find where we are having success, where we see areas in which to improve and how we can support all students achieve success."
