Four Howell middle school students have been named local winners in the 47th Annual America and Me Essay Contest. Madelynn Webb was named the Highlander Way Middle School first place winner and Matthew Perkola was named the Parker Middle School first place winner. Olivia Diakantonis and Morgan Atkins earned second and third place for Parker Middle School. The topic for this year’s contest was “My Personal Michigan Hero.”

“When I found out that I was the local winner I really couldn’t believe it because I thought I could do better on my essay,” said Webb.

As the first place winner from their school, Webb and Perkola’s essays will now advance to the state level competition. A team of judges comprised of a Michigan government official and the sponsoring teachers of last year’s winners will review and rank each entry. The top 10 statewide winners will receive a plaque, medallion and a cash award of $1,000. Additionally, the top 10 essay winners will be honored at a banquet in Lansing and be featured guests at a Lansing Lugnuts minor league baseball game.

This year, several thousand eighth grade students from more than 400 Michigan schools participated in the essay contest, which is sponsored by Farm Bureau Insurance. Started in 1968 and open to all Michigan eight grade students, the America and Me Essay Contest encourages students to explore the rich history and America.
