Howell High School Student Earns Top Honors in Lansing Art Gallery’s Art Scholarship Alert
Howell High School senior Natalie Jenks has been awarded the Sara
Jane Venable Scholarship in the Lansing Art Gallery’s 2016 Art
Scholarship Alert (ASA). ASA is a juried art exhibition and scholarship
competition open to high school students in a nine-county area. The Sara
Jane Venable Scholarship is the highest honor awarded. As the winner,
Jenks will receive a $1,000 scholarship and have her work displayed
during the Lansing Art Gallery’s ASA exhibition April 1-28.
year students are encouraged to submit a digital portfolio of original
works of art to the ASA exhibition. A jury of art professions determines
acceptance into the ASA exhibition and awards based on the quality,
consistency and depth of work in the portfolio. Only 100 students are
accepted into the ASA exhibition each year. Additionally, one portfolio
at each grade level receives an ASA Portfolio Award and that student has
multiple works displayed. All other accepted portfolios have one work
In addition to Jenks, 11 other Howell High School
students were selected to have their artwork displayed as part of ASA.
Those students are Jenna Berry, Katie Buyers, Vivian Houtari, Abigail
Martin, Maddie Osgood, Anthony Pitera, Bri Randall, Kaden Staley, Josh
Standley, Ben Stevens and Breanna Weems. Houtari’s portfolio was
selected as the 10th grade ASA Portfolio Award winner.
According to the Lansing Art Gallery’s website both Osgood and Pitera’s
artwork was also selected for an award, however, the award will not be
announced until the ASA Student Reception and Awards Ceremony April 15.
Lansing Art Gallery’s ASA exhibition runs April 1 through April 28. The
exhibition is free and open to the public. The ASA Student Reception
and Awards Ceremony will be held April 17 at 6 p.m. For more
