School of Choice

Howell Public Schools is a K-12 Schools of Choice district. Students who do not reside within the district boundaries, but would like to take advantage of Howell Public Schools' robust course offerings and technological opportunities are encouraged to apply. There is no cost for a student to attend Howell Public Schools via the Schools of Choice program.

To help maintain a safe environment for our families and staff, the Registration Office is currently operating on an appointment basis. To make an appointment, please call 517.548.6232.

When visiting the Registration Office, we ask that all visitors wear a mask or face covering if they are medically able to.

For families who need to submit paperwork (child's certified birth certificate, immunization records, vision screening results, and proof of residency) to complete the registration process, we have received approval to collect these items electronically. You can submit these by emailing a scanned copy of the paperwork to

Enrollment Deadline
1st Semester Friday, August 21, 2020
2nd Semester: Friday, January 8, 2021

Please visit us to register your student(s) at least 2 days prior to the date you wish your child(ren) to begin. This allows for the student's information to be entered into the school database and class placement / scheduling of your child(ren) to be completed before their start date. We will also have you notify / arrange transportation at that time. If there are no openings at your home school, your child(ren) may be transferred to another school within the district. If that happens, transportation WILL be provided. Your child will be placed in their home school the following school year. What to Bring to Register

Below are the registration forms needed to enroll your child in Howell Public Schools. The asterisks represent forms you will need to print, fill out and bring with you. It is the parent/guardian's responsibility to obtain the rest of the information from your child's previous school or your files. We will make copies and give the originals back to you. Registration packets can also be picked up from the Registration Office.

1 -  Registration Packet*
2 - Records Request Form (select  K-8 Form* or  9-12 Form*)
3 - Certified Birth Certificate or an  Inability to provide certified birth certificate form*
4 - Immunizations Record ( Revised requirements effective Jan. 1, 2010)
5 - Proof of Residency (driver's license, utility bill, or rental or purchase agreement)
6 - Legal Guardianship Papers (if not parent)
7 - Name/Address/Fax/Phone of previous school attended 

If registering for High School, also bring:
8 - Transcript from previous school

If registering for Special Education, also bring:
9 - Student's most recent IEP

If registering for Kindergarten, also bring:

Schools of Choice FAQ 

Q: What does "Schools of Choice" mean?

A: For Howell Public Schools, this means *any student in Livingston, Ingham, Shiawassee, Genesee, Oakland or Washtenaw County may attend Howell Public Schools. *(Expelled or suspended students are NOT accepted.) 

Q: Does Howell Public Schools have room for students at every grade level?
A: Yes, students at all grade levels, Kindergarten through 12th grade, as well as Alternative Education, are welcome. The district determines placement based upon enrollment at specific buildings.

Q: Is bus transportation available for my student(s)?
A: Students may use existing bus runs to travel to and from school. Students who are able to drive themselves are also welcome to do so. If this is not possible, parents are responsible for transportation.

Q: Is there a fee for my student(s) to attend Howell Public Schools?
A: There is no fee for your student(s) to attend Howell Schools. The State Foundation Grant follows your child to the district he/she attends.

Q: Will my student(s) be guaranteed a place in Howell Schools after this coming school year?
A: Yes, School of Choice students are guaranteed placement until they graduate from Howell Public Schools.

Q: How do I enroll my student(s) in Howell Public Schools through Schools of Choice?
A: Just call the Registrar's Office at 517-548-6232 between 7 am- 4:00 pm, Monday-Friday.
