4/13/17 - Recently four choirs from Highlander Way Middle School performed at the Michigan School Vocal Music Association (MSVMA) District Choral Festival at Walled Lake Northern High School. Students began preparing for the event in December and performed various songs including one sung in Latin and another in French. At the festival, the choirs performed for a panel of judges made up of current and former music teachers as well as doctoral students from Michigan State University. The choirs also had to sight-read a page of music for a judge after only looking at it for a few minutes. The school's sixth-grade choir, eighth-grade choir and Chamber Singers all received ratings of “I-Excellent” which qualifies them for participation in MSVMA State Choral Festival. The school’s seventh-grade choir earned a rating of “II-Good” missing the rating of “I-Excellent” by one point.
As part of the festival, the students received written feedback from the judges and had the opportunity to participate in a mini-clinic following their performance. The students will put this feedback into practice as they prepare for their final concert of the year which will be held on Thursday, June 1 at 7 p.m. in the Rod Bushey Performing Art Center at Howell High School.
