Highlander Way Middle School Celebrates Grand Opening of Student Run Credit Union
3/15/17 – On March 8, Highlander Way Middle School celebrated the grand opening of the school’s new student-run LOC Federal Credit Union branch. Working with a representative from LOC Federal Credit Union seventh grade students work the various jobs available at a financial institution. They accept deposits, process withdraws and open new savings accounts for their classmates. The branch is open to students, staff and parents each Wednesday from 7:45 to 8:15 a.m.
The student-run credit union teaches students about fiscal responsibility and helps strengthen the math skills that students learn in class. Additionally, the program teaches students important work and life skills such as interpersonal communications, teamwork, resume writing and interviewing skills.
“Everyone at Highlander Way Middle School is very excited about our new student-run credit union. This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to apply what they are learning in class to a real-world setting,” said Melanie Post, Highlander Way Middle School principal. “The students who work at the credit union are also learning important life skills that will benefit them long after they leave our school.”
In addition to the Highlander Way Middle School student-run credit union, LOC Federal Credit Union operates student-run credit unions at Hutchings Elementary, Northwest Elementary, Three Fires Elementary and Voyager Elementary.
