MacGregor's Message: 12/9/16

Dear Parents,

I truly believe when learning is fun and tied to real-world experiences and applications, students will be more engaged and retain more of the material being taught. Many of our teachers are using Project Based Learning to encourage their students to apply our curriculum to real world problems. The student response to this has been amazing. Additionally, our teachers are always finding ways to connect students with professionals who can share their story and encourage students to find their passion and follow their dreams.

Yesterday, students in Howell High School’s ceramic classes had a unique opportunity to work with and learn from Jeff Blandford a ceramic artist and potter based out of the west side of Michigan. Jeff put on demonstrations and held workshops using the pottery wheel. US Army Major General Bassett also visited the high school yesterday. He spoke with cadets in the Air Force Junior ROTC program

about his career path, building character, and being a leader.

In my last update, I shared that two of our FIRST Lego League robotics teams and one of our FIRST Tech Challenge robotics teams qualified to compete at their state championship events. I am very excited to share that our other FIRST Tech Challenge team, TEAM KILTS, has also qualified for the state championship event. All four teams will compete next Saturday, December 17. The FIRST Lego League event will be at Bloomfield Hills High School, and the FIRST Tech Challenge event will be at Lakeview High School in Battle Creek. Good luck to each of these teams.

Students learn best when they eat breakfast. This is why our Food Service Department offers healthy and delicious breakfasts at each school. As the cold sets in, the Highlander Way Middle School SPARK Club has launched a mitten drive to help spread the warmth. Recently, Howell High School Advanced Drama students connected with the school's freshman class when they hosted a Shakespeare Workshop. You can read more on each of these stories below.

Delicious School Breakfasts

Studies have shown that when students eat a healthy, well-rounded breakfast, they perform better in school. Each day, the Howell Public Schools Food Service Department offers healthy and tasty breakfast options in each school. Highlander Way Middle School SPARK Club Mitten Drive

The Highlander Way Middle School SPARK Club has launched a mitten drive to help those in need this winter. The club is collecting new hats, gloves, mittens and scarfs now through December 20. All of the items will be donated to local charities to help individuals in our area. To learn more about this effort, please visit https://goo.gl/6Tjvgb.

Howell High School Advanced Drama Class Holds Shakespeare Workshop

Shakespeare was a playwright, so when his works are read in English language arts classes, students sometimes struggle to understand the text. As the freshman class started to read Romeo and Juliet, students in the Advanced Drama Class hosted a workshop to help the freshman understand Shakespeare’s style. You can read more about the workshop at https://goo.gl/JXRr4Q.
