MacGregor's Message 10/12/18

Dear Families,

Last Tuesday, I had the honor of surprising Howell High School teacher Mrs. Mary Villarreal with the honor of Howell Public Schools Teacher of the Year. For more than 19 years, Mrs. Villarreal has worked tirelessly to ensure that each of her students reaches their full potential. She always goes above and beyond to support students and makes a video of each of her lessons so students can go back and review whenever needed. Mrs. Villarreal is known to stay after school to help tutor any student past or present if they need additional support. We were able to capture a video of the surprise, which you can view here. Please join me in congratulating Mrs. Villarreal on this honor.

When we talk about going above and beyond, one group that stands out in my mind is our principals. They come in early, stay late, work on the weekend and do whatever it takes to support their students, staff, and parents. From visiting a student battling an illness in the hospital to working on state committees and being a listening ear for someone in need, our principals are there. With October being National Principals Month, now is a great time to thank these amazing individuals for all that they do.

With the November election right around the corner, we have created a short video to share the details of the Securing Our Future Sinking Fund Proposal that will appear on the ballot. Please take a few minutes to watch this video to learn why we have placed this proposal on the ballot, what the funds generated will be used for, and what the millage will mean for taxpayers. As vaping and the use of e-cigarettes increases, we continue to look for ways to educate parents and students about the dangers associated with using such behavior. Our school resource officers have talked with students about this topic, last spring we partnered with St. Joseph Mercy to host an informational workshop regarding vaping, and our principals have shared resources via their newsletters. We have also been working with the City of Howell to put an ordinance in place to help curb our students’ use of these potentially harmful items. On Monday, the Howell City Council approved an ordinance that will do this. The ordinance will take effect on Sunday, October 14. You can view the full ordinance at https://goo.gl/VxpdH8. To learn more about vaping and some of the risks involved, please read this article that the Detroit Free Press recently published.

Next week our high school Construction Trades program will hold an open house to show the progress they have made on the home they are building, and later this month, the Livingston County Sheriff's Department will host a Trunk or Treat event. Next month, Parker Middle School Students will undertake a project to create blankets for children battling serious illnesses. I have shared more on each of these stories below.

HHS Construction Trades Open House

Each year students in Howell High School’s Construction Trades program build a home from the ground up. This year, the students will be holding four onsite open houses to allow the community to witness the progress on the house. The first of these open houses is scheduled for Wednesday, October 17 from 5 to 7:30 p.m. This year’s construction site is located at 560 Wright Road, near Parker Middle School.

Livingston County Public Safety Trunk or Treat

On Friday, October 26, first responders from around Livingston County will host a Trunk or Treat at the Livingston County Sheriff’s Department. This will be a fun, free, family-friendly event. The event will run from 6 to 8 p.m. For more information, please click here.

Fleece and Thank You

Next month, Parker Middle School students will participate in the Fleece and Thank You program. The students will help create blankets and videos that will be delivered to hospitalized children who are battling serious illnesses. The school’s goal is to create more than 150 blankets. The school is accepting donations to help cover the costs of the blanket supplies. You can donate here. If you would like to read more about this initiative, please visit https://goo.gl/1MEkk6.
