MacGregor's Message 9/28/18

Dear Families,

One of our high school teachers, Leah Brinker, has been recognized by the Family and Consumer Science Educators of Michigan (FCSEM) as the Family and Consumer Science Michigan Teacher of the Year. Mrs. Brinker teaches several family and consumer science courses including interior design, hospitality and tourism, and career decision making. Her dedication to our students is evident in everything she does, such as seeking out opportunities for her students to apply their skills to real-life situations and helping to plan the LOC Federal Credit Union Teen Financial Reality Fair. FSCEM will officially recognize Mrs. Brinker at its annual conference in November.

My first Coffee Chat of the school year will be held on Thursday, October 18 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at Howell High School’s Highlander Restaurant. I’ll provide the coffee and conversation, and breakfast items prepared by students in the school’s culinary arts program will be available for purchase. Attending a Coffee Chat is a great way to hear updates on various district initiatives and programs as well as to ask any questions you may have. I have also scheduled Coffee Chats for Wednesday, January 9 from 6 to 7 p.m. at The Little Highlanders Learning Center; on Saturday, March 9 from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. at The Hive Teen Center; and on Thursday, May 16 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Howell Area Chamber of Commerce.

At Howell Public Schools we work diligently each day to meet our students' needs and to help them reach their full potential. One of the major factors that can affect a child’s ability to learn is hunger. When a student lacks access to meals, it can affect their performance at school. The free and reduced lunch program helps address this issue during the week, but not over the weekend and school breaks. Knowing that this need exists in our community, we launched a partnership with Weekend Survival Kits last school year. Weekend Survival Kits provides meal kits to qualifying families every other week and has proven to be a great program that is now supporting approximately 300 families in our district. Weekend Survival Kits is a non-profit program that relies on volunteers to help prepare the kits and is supported by donations. If you would like to support this program by volunteering to help package the kits, please click here. If you would like to make a financial donation to the program, please click here (please be sure to include Howell Public Schools in the comment box). Lastly, if your family qualifies for free and reduced school meals, and you would like to learn more about the Weekend Survival Kits program, please click here.
