MacGregor's Message 9/14/18

Dear Families,

Our district is filled with exceptional teachers who continually go above and beyond to ensure that our students feel valued, feel loved and of course reach their full potential. One of the ways that we recognize these fantastic teachers in through our Teacher of the Year award. We are currently accepting nominations for the 2018-19 Howell Public Schools Teacher of the Year. You can nominate a teacher who has made an impact on your family at https://goo.gl/DcNNom. Nominations must be submitted by 4 p.m. on Friday, September 28. Once the nomination window closes, a committee of district stakeholders will meet to review all of the nominations and select the winner. The winner will be announced in October.

As we roll out our 1:1 Chromebook program, I am excited to share information about a new collaboration we have launched with the Howell Carnegie District Library. Through this collaboration, all Howell students will be able to access many of the library’s digital subscriptions and resources by using their student ID number as a virtual library card. To access the resources students should visit the Howell Carnegie District Library website and use their student number as the library barcode and 1234 as the pin. I am very thankful for the continued support that the Howell Carnegie District Library continues to provide to our students and district. You can read more about this new effort at https://goo.gl/NH56FU.

Next week is Homecoming 2018. This is one of my favorite weeks of the year as it is always fun to see our whole community show their Highlander pride. All of our schools have been invited to participate in a district-wide spirit week. On Wednesday, the annual Powderpuff Football games will begin at 6:30 p.m. at Memorial Stadium. The Homecoming Parade will start at 5 p.m on Friday and travel down Grand River from National Street to Center Street. Also on Friday, our Howell Highlanders will take on the Hartland Eagles at Memorial Stadium. The game will begin at 7 p.m. with the Homecoming King and Queen crowned during halftime. The Howell High School Homecoming Dance will be held on Saturday, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. in the high school field house.

We are in need of volunteers to help with a LOC Teen Financial Reality Fair that will be held at Howell High School next month. The students and staff at Innovation Academy have launched a food pantry that is open to all Howell families. Next week, we will hold the first of two community meetings to share information on the Securing Our Future Sinking Fund Proposal that will appear on the Tuesday, November 6 ballot. You can read more on each of these items below.

Volunteers Needed for LOC Teen Financial Reality Fair

On Monday, October 8, all seniors at Howell High School will take part in a LOC Federal Credit Union Teen Financial Reality Fair. This event is a hands-on learning experience that will teach students about the importance of financial planning, budgeting, and saving. During the fair, the students will visit several stations where they will make life choices like what car to purchase or cell phone plan to sign up for,  and learn how those choices affect their monthly budget. The fair will run from 8 a.m. - 10 a.m. in the high school field house. To make this a success we are in need of volunteers to work at the various stations. If you are interested in volunteering, please visit https://goo.gl/2z37JN.

Innovation Academy Launches Food Pantry

The students and staff at Innovation Academy have launched a new food pantry within their building as a way to help support students and families around Howell Public Schools. The food pantry is open each weekday from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m and can be utilized by all Howell Public Schools families. Innovation Academy and the food pantry are located at 861 E. Sibley Street. If you would like to donate non-perishable canned goods to support the food pantry they can be dropped off at the address above.
