MacGregor's Message 4/20/18

Dear Families,

Tuesday was an exciting day for Howell High School and our district. During a high school staff meeting, Jason Schrock was surprised with the announcement that he has been named the 2018 Michigan Association of Secondary School Administrators (MASSP) High School Principal of the Year. Mr. Schrock is incredibly deserving of this honor. Everything that he does is guided by the question, “what is best for our students and school?” In addition to being honored as the Michigan High School Principal of the Year, MASSP has also selected Mr. Schrock to be Michigan’s nominee for the National Principal of the Year award. You can read more about this honor at https://goo.gl/JpeMZu. We also captured the surprise on video, which you can view here.

One of the topics that has surfaced in my conversations with parents and during my Coffee Chats is vaping. To help parents and students better understand this issue, we have partnered with Saint Joseph Mercy Health System to provide an informational workshop titled Vaping: 101, What’s Important to Know. The workshop will focus on the signs, symptoms, and current trends surrounding vaping. The workshop will be held on Tuesday, May 15 from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Parker Middle School commons. To learn more about the workshop, please visit https://goo.gl/x6ZHSQ.

To cap off what has been an incredible season, our high school FIRST Robotics Team, the S.C.O.T.S. Bots, will be competing at the FIRST Robotics World Championship next week. Our team excelled at the FIRST Robotics State Championship last weekend and once again earned the Chairman’s Award, which qualified them to compete at the world championship. Our team will be one of the teams featured on WHMI’s Sunday Morning news show, Viewpoint, which will air this Sunday at 8:30 a.m.

As a reminder, I want to share a few upcoming dates. Next Tuesday, April 24 at 6 p.m. I will be giving the 2018 State of the District Address. This year we will hold the State of the District Address in the media center at Three Fires Elementary. Our final half day of the school year is scheduled for Friday, May 11, and my last Coffee Chat of the school year will be on Thursday, May 17 at 9:30 a.m. at the Howell Chamber of Commerce. Lastly, please remember that we changed the last day of school from Wednesday, June 13 to Thursday, June 14 to accommodate a makeup day of school. This was necessary as we exceeded our allowed number of inclement weather days.

Yesterday, the fourth-grade students at Southwest Elementary held their annual Wax Museum. Parker Middle School’s production of Disney’s The Little Mermaid runs through this Saturday at the Rod Bushey Performing Arts Center, and artwork created by six Howell High School students is on display at the Lansing Art Gallery through Thursday, April 26. You can read more about each of these stories below.

Southwest Wax Museum a Success

A student at Southwest dressed up as a historic figureStudents, family, and friends filled the halls of Southwest Elementary on Thursday, April 19 for a chance to meet their favorite historical figure during the school’s annual fourth-grade wax museum. The wax museum is the final part of an extensive research project completed by each fourth-grade student.
