MacGregor's Message 12/1/17

Dear Parents,

I am so proud of all of our students who were part of last Friday’s Fantasy of Lights Parade. Our student musicians sounded outstanding, and I am pleased to share that the Parker Middle School band was awarded the Best Use of Music Award from the parade committee. Additionally, it was very exciting to see all of the runners in the Fantasy 5K wearing a shirt designed by Howell High School senior Adrea Eskola. Adrea designed the shirt as a project in the high school’s Advanced Digital Imaging class.

Each day I am amazed by the dedication of our support and service staff. These hardworking individuals are always going above and beyond to support our students, parents, teachers, and principals. Recently, I had the honor of surprising two of our employees with the 2017-2018 Support Person of the Year and Service Person of the Year awards. Karen Helsper a paraprofessional at Three Fires Elementary, was named our Service Person of the Year. Mrs. Helsper works each day to support her students and ensure that they are successful at school. Karen Doran, a financial assistant in our Business Department, was honored as our Support Person of the Year. Mrs. Doran handles employee benefits for our staff. You can read more about these honors at https://goo.gl/URjeXu.

As we head into the winter sports season, both our boys and girls basketballs teams are receiving praise and are expected to have a strong season. Recently, the Detroit Free Press named our Lady Highlanders as the number three team in Michigan heading into the season. The Livingston Daily is also predicting a strong season for our boys’ team. You can find the full winter sports schedule at https://goo.gl/g92VU1.

Next Friday our students will have a half day of school. Our high school students will be dismissed at 10:50 a.m., middle school students will be released at 10:51 a.m. and elementary students will be dismissed at 12:05 p.m. Please remember that elementary students in grades kindergarten through third must be met by an adult or older sibling at the bus stop. The elementary school half day bus drop off times can be found at https://goo.gl/UFw7VJ.

Recently, Voyager first grade students wrote biographies on the staff at their school as part of a social studies project. Several of our students have been selected to participate in various State Honors Choirs and Bands at the Michigan Music Conference in January. There is still time for eligible families to sign up for the Weekend Survival Kit program. I have shared more on each of these stories below.

Voyager Students Pen Biographies

a student scans her QR codeFirst-grade students at Voyager Elementary recently completed a social studies project that turned them into biographers. Using Project Based Learning, each student interviewed a staff member, wrote a biography on them, created a flag to hang outside the staff member’s door and created an audio recording of their biography that could be accessed by a quick response code on the flag.
