MacGregor's Message 11/3/17

Dear Parents,

Last year, we began the process of transitioning to online progress reports and report cards. We started small by discontinuing printed progress reports while still providing paper report cards. Now, we are ready to move into the next stage of this process by moving to online report cards. The first quarter ends today, and your child’s first quarter report card will be available in the PowerSchool Parent Portal on Friday, November 10 at 8 a.m. If you are not familiar with how to access the PowerSchool Parent Portal, you can find instructions on how to setup your account at https://goo.gl/3JQAQi. Instructions on how to access your child’s report card can be found at https://goo.gl/dzKMys. If you would like a printed copy of your child’s report card, please contact the main office at your child’s school.

This weekend, the Howell High School Performing Arts Department will present its fall play Almost, Maine. The play is a romantic comedy comprised of short scenes featuring various residents of the town falling in and out of love in various unexpected ways. The school will present the play November 3 and 4 at 7 p.m., and November 5 at 2 p.m. All shows are at the Rod Bushey Performing Arts Center. Since this is a romantic comedy, it is most suitable for young adults.

For some of our students, the meals they have at school are the only meals that they receive each day. This means that some students go hungry during the weekend. To help combat this, we are partnering with the locally based nonprofit Weekend Survival Kits to provide free meals and snacks to our students in need. Weekend Survival Kits will provide eligible students with several meals and one to two snacks every weekend throughout the school year. Additional information about this program will be sent home in our elementary students’ folders next week and will be included in each of our buildings’ e-newsletters next Friday.

There is still time to submit nominations for the 2017 Support Person of the Year and Service Person of the Year awards. A group of Howell High School student leaders have launched a district-wide canned food drive to support those in need this holiday season.

The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) is working to gather feedback on the state’s new “School Transparency Dashboard” via an online survey. You can read more about each of these items below.

Support Person and Service Person of the Year Nominations

We are still accepting nominations for our Support Person and Service Person of the Year awards. The nomination deadline is Friday, November 10 at 4 p.m. Nominations can be submitted online at https://goo.gl/MVNNte. Paper copies of the nomination form are available in the main office of each school.

District-wide Canned Food Drive Runs Through November 24

Students in Howell High School’s leadership class have organized a district-wide canned food drive to benefit Gleaners Community Food Bank. Last year the students collected 13,000 canned goods and have set this year’s goal at 24,000 canned goods. Donation boxes have been placed in each school, and LOC Federal Credit Union has placed a donation box at its Howell branch to provide a community donation location. You can read more about this effort at https://goo.gl/DgbDzL.

MDE School Transparency Dashboard Survey

Parents and other caregivers of children from preschool through grade 12 are invited to provide feedback on Michigan’s new, online transparency dashboard designed to show the performance of every public school in Michigan. The dashboard is currently under development by the MDE. MDE is gathering information on the usefulness of certain features of the dashboard via a survey at https://goo.gl/PTmUov. The survey will help shape the final version of the dashboard.
