MacGregor's Message 9/8/17

Dear Parents,

The 2017-2018 school year is off to a great start. The energy in our schools on Tuesday was incredible as our teachers and staff welcomed back students. It was great to see our high school LINK Crew Leaders welcoming the freshman class to high school and our middle school WEB Leaders assisting our sixth-grade students as they transitioned into middle school. This year, Northwest Elementary rolled out the red carpet to welcome back their students, and our other elementary schools had fun photo opportunities and events to kick off the school year. We also welcomed several new staff to our district this year. To help introduce our new teachers, we created a short video that you can view at https://goo.gl/KTcd3c.

This year, we have partnered with the Howell Rotary Club to sponsor a special Kid’s Zone at the Rotary Club’s Tour de Livingston bike ride on October 8, 2017. The Kid’s Zone will feature various activities for young children. Students in the high school’s early childhood education program will staff the Kid’s Zone providing the high school students with hands on experience working with children. The Tour de Livingston is a family friendly event with various distance routes beginning and ending at Island Lake Park. All proceeds from this event help to bridge the gap for local hardworking families struggling to meet their most basic needs; prepare every child to be ready for success, and build a healthy community for all residents via the Livingston County United Way. To learn more about the Tour de Livingston, please visit www.tourdelivingston.org.

I’d like to welcome Officer Don Banfield and Deputy Bill Schuster to Howell Public Schools. Officer Banfield is our new school resource officer from the Howell Police Department. He will work out of Howell High School and provide support to our six schools that are within the city limits. Deputy Schuster is a member of the Livingston County Sheriff’s Department's newly created Community Outreach Bureau. Deputy Schuster will provide support to our three schools that are outside of the city limits. One of the main goals of both Officer Banfield and Deputy Schuster is to ensure that all students feel safe when attending school. Additionally, they will work to foster a positive relationship between students and the law enforcement community. Officer Banfield and Deputy Schuster will be visible at our schools and many events throughout the year.

Once again this year, I will be holding several Coffee Chats as an opportunity to engage in meaningful conversations with district stakeholders. Our middle school and high school open houses are next week, and Howell High School’s annual homecoming parade and game are quickly approaching. I’ve shared more about each of these items below.

Coffee Chats are Back

Last year I began hosting Coffee Chats as a way to engage our district’s stakeholders in meaningful conversations about our school system. I found value in these conversations and hope that those who attended did as well. I am going to continue hosting Coffee Chats this school year, with the first one scheduled for Thursday, October 19 at 9:30 a.m. at Howell High School’s Highlander Restaurant. I am working on scheduling the rest of the Coffee Chats for the year and plan to include an evening and weekend date.

Middle and High School Open Houses

Please remember that our high school open house is scheduled for Tuesday, September 12 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Both middle schools will hold their open houses on Thursday, September 14 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Attending these open houses are a great way to connect with your child’s teachers and the school staff.

Homecoming Parade and Game are October 6

Mark your calendars for the annual Howell High School Homecoming Parade and Football game. This year’s events will take place on Friday, October 6. As the date draws closer, we will share additional details; however, I wanted to make sure that everyone had the date on their calendar. This is always a great time when our schools and community come together as one.
