MacGregor's Message 2/11/2022

Dear Families

Today marks the end of National School Counseling Week. National School Counseling Week highlights the vital role that our school counselors play in supporting our students. We are fortunate to have an incredible group of school counselors who support our students' academic, career, and social-emotional development. From hosting new student lunch groups to supporting the college application process, our counselors show up for each student every day. Please join me in thanking all of our school counselors for their continued dedication to all of our students.

Ensuring that our students and staff come to a safe learning environment, we have partnered with Secure Education Consultants (SEC). This company specializes in safety and security in the educational setting. This week, members of the SEC team visited each of our schools to perform site assessments. This will help us review the physical security of our building and also our safety and security processes through an objective lens. The SEC team will provide both a district and building level assessment and will work with the District Safety and Security team to implement the recommendations.

Wednesday evening was a very special night at Howell High School. Our Unified Champion Schools (UCS) basketball and pom teams hosted their senior night, and Special Olympics of Michigan presented the school with its UCS National Banner School award. While the school earned this honor last year, the banner's presentation was delayed until this year. Being named a UCS National Banner School honors the commitment of our students, staff, and community to provide an inclusive environment for students of all abilities.

Recently, Christine Schoendorff, Voyager Elementary music teacher, was named the Michigan VFW Elementary Teacher of the Year. The VFW Teacher of the Year awards honor educators "who teach citizenship education topics regularly and promote America's history and traditions effectively." As a Michigan VFW Teacher of the Year, Schoendorff is now a nominee for the National VFW Teacher of the Year Award. The winner of that award will be announced in May. To establish the future priorities of the school district, the #OneHowell Committee has drafted a revised Adaptive Plan. The draft plan includes a revised vision, goal statements, and guiding questions. If you have not already done so, please take a moment to share your feedback on the draft work related to the district's Adaptive Plan by completing our survey at

Sincerely,
Erin J. MacGregor, Ed.S.
