Update Regarding MDHHS Epidemic Order Issued Sunday, November 15, 2020
Dear Families,

Due to the increase in the number of positive COVID-19 cases in the state, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) announced today, Sunday, November 15, 2020, a new Epidemic Order that mandates all high schools in the State of Michigan to move to mandated distance learning beginning Wednesday, November 18, 2020, through Tuesday, December 8, 2020. At this time, our elementary and middle schools will remain open, and our middle and elementary school students will continue to attend school in-person. The Little Highlanders Learning Center will also remain open during this time. This is subject to change based on staffing needs and possible future orders from the MDHHS or the Livingston County Health Department.

Under this order, Howell High School students will begin following the district’s mandated distance learning schedule Wednesday, November 18, 2020. The district’s mandated distance learning plan and schedule can be found at HowellSchools.com/MDL. Innovation Academy students will receive an email from Mr. LaGalo with details about their mandated distance learning schedule.

Athletic events and extracurricular activities for all students kindergarten through twelfth are postponed effective immediately through Tuesday, December 8, 2020.

I am very thankful to our students, staff, and families who have embraced the safety protocols that allowed us to maintain in-person learning for the past three months. While the community spread of COVID-19 has increased, we have not seen the transmission of COVID-19 in our schools thanks to our safety protocols and mitigation efforts. Even though our high schools will be closed for in-person instruction, we must remain vigilant in following all COVID-19 health and safety recommendations from the Livingston County Health Department and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to slow the community spread and allow our high schools to re-open for in-person instruction and our elementary and middle schools to remain open. These include:
- Wearing a facial covering when in public
- Practicing frequent hand washing
- Staying home with showing signs of illness
- Avoiding social gatherings and practicing social distancing.

I will continue to keep you updated as additional information becomes available.

Sincerely,
Erin J. MacGregor, Ed.S.
Superintendent
Howell Public Schools
