MacGregor's Message 7/9/20

Dear Families,

Having reviewed both Governor Whitmer’s Executive Order and the MI Safe Schools Return to School Roadmap, our planning teams are making significant progress on our plan to have students return to school in the fall. Plans for our new virtual school, Highlander Virtual are progressing, as is the planning of what in-person instruction and how we would improve our instructional practices should there be another mandated school closure. To help inform this process, we will be sending another parent survey in the coming days to gather feedback on aspects of the Safe Schools Return to School Roadmap and other topics.

Salvation Army Summer Lunch Bunch Continues to Offer Meals

The Salvation Army Summer Lunch Bunch continues to offer meals and pantry packs to those in need during the summer months. Pantry Packs are filled with boxed and canned, shelf-stable groceries that can help the families build a menu of lunches for the upcoming week. In addition, fresh fruits and vegetables are introduced into Pantry Packs as funds and donations allow. To learn more about the Summer Lunch Bunch, please visit https://bit.ly/3dTCgbB

Highlander Reading Express Will Be Out Next Week

Next week, our county’s early literacy officer, Deputy Lockhart, will be out with The Highlander Reading Express, our mobile library. Due to the current circumstances, The Highlander Reading Express will run differently this year. Instead of students getting on board to check out books, Deputy Lockhart will be providing free books for children to keep. This is possible due to several grants that we have received. There will be books for students of all ages, and each student will receive one book while supplies last. The Highlander Reading Express will be at the Howell High School Freshman Campus on Tuesday, July 14, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and at Parker Middle School (off Wright Road near the Parker Stadium) on Thursday, July 16, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Updating Student Information In PowerSchool

As we begin to prepare for the 2020-21 school year, please take a moment to review your child’s information in the PowerSchool Parent Portal and make any updates that are needed. You can find directions on how to do this at https://bit.ly/2OchZTy.

Weekly Bond Update

Our summer bond projects continue to move forward. At several elementary schools, the new classroom flooring is installed, and the crews are beginning to install the new halfway following. At Highlander Way Middle School, the old gym floor has been removed, and the new floor has been delivered. Across the district, electrical and mechanical updates are ongoing, as is the work on the new secure entryways. You can view the full weekly bond update at https://bit.ly/3gHsjir

Sincerely,

Erin J. MacGregor, Ed.S.
