MacGregor's Message 4/13/17

Dear Parents,

I’d like to invite you to the Second Annual State of the District Address which will be held on Tuesday, April 25 at 6 p.m. at Parker Middle School. During the address, I will share updates on the achievements and ongoing work of the district as well as share the vision for the district which is outlined in our strategic plan. On Monday night the Board of Education passed a resolution supporting the creation of early college programs in Livingston County. In an early college program, students attend high school for five years and graduate with a high school diploma and up to 60 transferable credits, an industry credential, or an Associate degree. In the program, students begin taking college level classes their junior year, and increase the number of college classes they are enrolled in each year. The tuition costs of the college classes are paid for by the district. This will be a great opportunity for our students, and I am very excited to bring it to Howell. The Livingston Educational Service Agency has submitted an application to the State of Michigan to start the early college programs, and if all goes according to plan, we will launch the first two programs next school year.

It has been a busy few weeks around the district. Over spring break, Challenger Elementary received playground upgrades. Recently, the Highlander Way Middle School Choir earned top honors at a District Choral Festival, and our high school Air Force  Junior ROTC program earned the highest ranking awarded during a recent Air Force inspection. I’ve shared more about each of these below.

Challenger Playground Gets An Upgrade

Challenger Elementary Playground Ribbon CuttingWhile Challenger Elementary students enjoyed a relaxing spring break, a work crew was busy giving the school’s playground a makeover. The crews installed new playground equipment and a new GaGa ball pit. To celebrate the new playground, Challenger students participated in a groundbreaking ceremony before spring break and in a ribbon cutting ceremony after the break. The upgrades were paid for through the fundraising efforts of the school’s PTO with the help of the district’s Capital Improvement Fund.

Highlander Way Middle School Choirs Earn High Ranking at Festival

HWMS Choir at FestivalRecently, Highlander Way Middle School choir students performed for a panel of judges at the Michigan School Vocal Music Association District Choral Festival. The school’s  sixth-grade choir, eighth-grade choir, and Chamber Singers all received ratings of “I-Excellent” and the school’s seventh-grade choir earned a rating of “II-Good” missing the rating of  “I-Excellent” by one point. Howell High School Air Force Junior ROTC Unit Gets Outstanding Evaluation

Howell HS JROTC CadetsDuring a recent inspection by the United States Air Force, Howell High School’s Air Force Junior ROTC Unit earned an overall assessment ranking of “Exceeds Standards” which is the highest rating that a unit can attain. In the evaluation, the Air Force inspector noted that “the Howell High School Air Force JROTC citizenship program is making a positive impact on the cadets, the school, and the community.” You can find the full story on this great accomplishment at https://goo.gl/e484hB.
