MacGregor's Message 3/3/17

Dear Parents,

In recent years, the State of Michigan has increased the number of instructional days that school districts must provide to their students. Due to a state law requiring districts to begin school after Labor Day, we have seen the end of the school year pushed later into June. The Livingston Educational Service Agency (LESA) has applied for a waiver from the Michigan Department of Education that would allow the school districts in the county to begin the school year before Labor Day. If LESA is granted the waiver, it does not mean we would be required to start school before Labor Day but rather would make it an option for us. As such, I would like to gauge the interest of our community in this idea. Please take a few moments to provide us your opinion at https://goo.gl/sBj9Gs.

In a few weeks, I will host my third Coffee Chat of the school year. Please consider joining me on Thursday, March 16 at 9:30 a.m. at the State Side Deli for this informal meeting. During the Coffee Chat, I will share updates on our district and answer any questions you may have. If you cannot attend this Coffee Chat, there will be one more before the end of the school year. State Side Deli is located at 4140 E Grand River in Howell.

Members of the Parker Middle School choirs recently held a joint performance with Southwestern Academy High School of Flint. The Howell High School Performing Arts Department will bring the magic of Narnia to life March 17-19 when it presents “The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe.” Fourth-grade students at Hutchings Elementary have created “Welcome to Michigan” brochures that are being used by a local real estate agent. You can read more about each of these below.

Parker Choir Performs with Flint School

Recently members of the Parker Middle School choirs traveled to Flint for a joint performance with Southwestern Academy High School seventh through tenth-grade choirs. During the performance, the choirs performed the song “But a Flint Holds A Fire” which was commissioned by the Parker choir program. Southwestern Academy High School is one of three schools that helped write parts of the song. This was a great opportunity for our students to perform and interact with students from another choir program. To read more about the performance, please visit https://goo.gl/AamzDc.

Visit Narnia with the HHS Performing Arts Department

Join Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy as they travel through the back of the wardrobe and into the magical land of Narnia during the Howell High School Performing Arts Department’s production of “The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe. The cast and crew of the play have been working very hard preparing for opening night on Thursday, March 17, and I cannot wait to see this show. Hutchings Students Welcome Families to Michigan

Using project based learning, students in Mrs. Palo’s fourth-grade class at Hutchings Elementary created “Welcome to Michigan” brochures that a local real estate agent currently has displayed in his office. This project mixed several areas of our curriculum into one engaging project that the students were very excited to work on. To learn more about this project, please visit https://goo.gl/jDPXxa.
