MacGregor's Message 10/26/18

Dear Families,

We are just 11 days away from the November 6 election. As I have shared before, when you visit the polls on that day, you will be asked to vote on the Howell Public Schools Securing Our Future Sinking Fund Millage. This is an expected no tax rate increase proposal that will provide the district with approximately $1.3 million annually for security upgrades and major building repairs. Security upgrades that could be funded by the Securing Our Future Sinking Fund Millage include bollards outside of building main entrances and upgraded security cameras. Major repair projects include replacing or repairing aging roofs, heating and cooling systems, and sidewalk and parking lot repairs. To learn more about the Howell Public Schools Securing Our Future Sinking Fund, please visit HowellSchools.com/SecuringOurFuture. To learn more about the elected positions that will appear on the ballot, please visit Vote411.org.

We are now accepting nominations for the Howell Public Schools Support and Service Person of the Year awards. These awards honor our outstanding office staff, maintenance employees, computer technicians, special needs aides, general education aides, and hall monitors. You can submit nominations online at https://goo.gl/forms/tmIKmc6faRLSN1DB2. All nominations must be received by Tuesday, November 20 at 4 p.m.

On Saturday, November 3, we will host a FIRST Robotics FIRST Tech Challenge competition at Parker Middle School. More than 30 middle school robotics teams from around the state will be competing at the event, including our four teams Team KAOS, Team Kilts, Team Kudos, and Team Krush. If you have never attended a FIRST Robotics event, please consider stopping by. You can read more about the event at https://goo.gl/bnb5Nw.

Earlier this week, we dealt with a rumor circulating among high school students that involved an act of violence against Howell High School. The high school administration was made aware of the rumor by a student who had heard it. As soon as the report was received, the school began an investigation, which involved the Howell Police Department. Through the investigation, the police determined that no threat was ever made and that this was in fact just a rumor being spread throughout the school. Unfortunately, this rumor also spread to our middle schools. While it is imperative that our students feel empowered to speak up to a trusted adult when they have a concern like this, it is also extremely important that they understand how spreading rumors like this can negatively impact the learning environment.

Last week, kindergarten students in Mrs. Ott’s class at Hutchings Elementary held an ABC Fashion Show and Highlander Way Middle School sixth grade students put on an ecosystem presentation for fifth-grade students from Challenger and Voyager. All month, Howell High School has been celebrating Michigan College Month to promote a college-going culture. You can read more about each of these below.

Hutchings ABC Fashion Show

Recently, students in Lori Ott’s kindergarten class at Hutchings Elementary put on an Alphabet Fashion Show. The show celebrated the completion of the students’ alphabet unit. During the alphabet unit, students learned the beginning sounds of each letter and practiced writing their letters. For the fashion show, each student created a stylish vest that featured pictures of items that started with their letter.

Highlander Way Ecosystem Showcase

Last Friday, Highlander Way Middle School sixth grade students held an Ecosystem Exhibition for fifth-grade students from Voyager and Challenger. To prepare for the presentation, the middle school students researched various organisms from different ecosystems, wrote presentations, and created displays or slideshows to represent their organisms. The project combined various core academic areas such as science and English Language Arts.

College Month at Howell High School

October is Michigan College Month. All month long Howell High School held various events and activities to promote different post-secondary education options and encourage students to apply to a post-secondary educational institution. This is the third year that Howell High School has participated in Michigan College Month, which is part of a larger initiative to create a college-going culture at the school.
